The Lusophone world (who speaks Portuguese) is currently valued between 500 and 550 million people. Portuguese is the eighth most spoken language on the planet and the third in the western Europe, after English and Castilian.
Portuguese is speaked on four continents:
América -192 millions people
Ásia -330 millions people
África- 16 millions people
Europe- 12 millions people
Portuguese is an official language of the European Union (formerly EEC) since 1986, when Portugal was admitted to the institution. Because of agreements with the Mercosur (Southern Common Market), to which Brazil belongs, Portuguese is taught as a foreign language in other countries that participate in it. In 1996, they created the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), linking the Portuguese-speaking countries in order to increase cooperation and cultural exchanges between member countries and to standardize and disseminate the Portuguese language.
Portuguese is increasing all over the world, more and more people get interested in it and that makes me believe that some day Portuguese will be one of the three most spoken languages.
